KitaDic

Minimalism Dictionary Extension for Firefox Browser

Initial version released in 2006, latest version in Jan 2010, and currently updating.

"KitaDic" is an English-English dictionary extension for Firefox.

After searching for an 'extremely easy to use' dictionary extension, I created KitaDic by forking Backword extension.

How-to-use

After installing KitaDic extension, place your mouse pointer over a word of your interest and hold CTRL key for 1 second. KitaDic will fetch the meaning of the word from free-of-charge Wiktionary.org and show it in a 'Post-it' shape window. Click anywhere outside of the definition window to close it.

You can activate/deactivate KitaDic by clicking KitaDic icon(human face) on the lower right corner of Firefox.

Little more detail about KitaDic's behavior

• Top 100+ basic words will be ignored.

• Words inside TEXTAREA, INPUT,SELECT tags will be ignored.

• Definition window provides external links to the definitions in Wikipedia, Naver (English-Korean), Daum (Eng-Korean) and Answers.com. Those links will be opened in a new tab.

• KitaDic will guess the stem of the word.

• You can keep looking-up words inside definition window by placing your mouse pointer on them.

• The definition window will be closed when you click outside of it.

How to change KitaDic behavior settings (no user interface yet)

Currently, KitaDic doesn't have a user interface for setting user preferences. However, KitaDic provides an option that users can change via Firefox's interval config interface.

about:config in Firefox's address bar and search the following items:

• extensions.kitadic.wordmondelay : affects how many miliseconds the extension should wait for before fetching the word. Unit is miliseconds (1/1000 sec), and default value is 1500. This option is affective only when

extensions.kitadic.usectrlkey is false.

• extensions.kitadic.usectrlkey : [true | false] set to true to use CTRL key (holding 1 second) for fetching.

• extensions.kitadic.enabled : [true | false] KitaDic is activated if it is set to true
